you must, must, MUST go to the frist THIS WEEKEND and see the carrie mae weems exhibit before it closes. I am super ashamed to say that I knew nothing about her and was actually there to see the german expressionism exhibit, but her work & photography BLEW ME AWAY. It is all about race and gender and it was extremely powerful and poignant.
“From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried” was one of my favorites, and I personally found it particularly relevant in the midst of “Django” and pop culture’s understanding and representation of slavery.
I also loved “Not Manet’s Type,” and “The Kitchen Table Series,” the latter of which you really have to see in person so you can read the text that went with it.
I am serious Nashville, had I known how awesome this lady was (still embarrassed I didn’t) I would have put this out months in advance, but IT CLOSES THIS WEEKEND AND YOU HAVE TO GO, I SWEAR TO GOD.
